Radar Detector Shop Newsletter - July 2006
Welcome to the Radar Detector Shop news letter, with details of new developments in Speed Camera and Speed Camera Detection products. DID YOU HEAR THE ONE ABOUT THE SPEEDING POLICEMAN We have all heard the story about the officer that did 159mph in his new Police car because he was testing its capabilities. Now there’s another one who thinks he can do whatever speed he likes without a good reason. There also appears to have been some underhand ‘working of the system’ to enable the officer involved to get away with simply a caution from his superior officer - allegedly. A schoolteacher was being taken to a Police station after being stopped for a breathalyser test because he had reportedly been speeding and had crossed a solid white line. Robert Cox refused to take the test and was driven at high speed to the Police station which included a 91mph dash in a 40mph zone and a 124mph dash in a 70mph zone. The irony being that it was in the same area that Cox had been accused of speeding. The reason for the 15-mile high speed and terrifying experience was that the officer was taking him for a breathalyser test at the Police station. The cars sirens were used on the trip between Swadlincote and Derby. Cox felt that "If he had sneezed slightly or had a puncture the car would have been out of control and I could have been killed." PC Chris Newsome who was driving feels that as an advanced Police driver his car was in his control at all times, but come on, 91 in a 40mph zone has to be dangerous, what are they telling us here that if you are an advanced driver you are capable of travelling at more than twice the speed limit in safety. There were moves made by the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) to prosecute Newsome saying that “The speeds attained at key moments in the incident, namely 91mph in a 40mph zone and 124mph on a 70mph dual carriageway, cannot be justified in these circumstances.” The IPCC said, “that the officer concerned, although an advanced police driver, had travelled at speeds which were not proportionate and appropriate to the situation.” They also raised the question
that Newsome should be prosecuted, but the fact that Newsome had not
replied to the enquiries in good time, had meant that the investigation
had taken more than 6 months. Which rendered prosecution impossible
as they were advised by the force solicitor. Monitron Camera Launched
The Monitron camera is taller and with a smaller head than the Gatso camera making it more difficult to see, this camera is also installed at traffic lights to catch red light jumpers, but during the green light cycle it can be programmed to operate as a speed camera.
